Q+A | Head First with Thomas & Callan...
Question #1. Why is your circus troupe named Head First Acrobats? Is it a philosophy you guys live by?
Originally I was in a hoop diving troupe called Head First Acrobats, in another crew. Hoop diving is an old Chinese acrobatic act where you dive and flip and twist through stacks of hoops. By the time Cal and I started working together, the other members had disbanded. We were doing a lot of dangerous tricks where the head was in danger, and we decided the name fit so we kept it going.
Our philosophy is fun and dumb! We try to mix the peak of excitement with silly and stupid skits, so people can see the human in us and not just robotic acrobatics.
Question #2. Tell us how your troupe got started, how does everyone know each other? What can people expect from Head First Acrobats?
Cal and I met when he was at NICA (the National Institute of Circus Arts). He knew I wanted to build a teeterboard for a show, and so he offered to show me how to do it, and we built it together and started jumping. Teeterboard is an act where you jump and do flips on a seesaw, we had so much fun training together we decided to make a show together. And the rest is history. We met the new cast members from watching performances of them in other shows. Originally we were attracted to their standout abilities, but it was their personalities which shone through on the training floor which made us decide to keep working together.
When you come to see a HFA show, expect a lot of excitement, a lot of slapstick and fun, and some very intense acrobatics.

Question #3. What's the signature circus act from Head First Acrobats?
There is one act that has been in every show, and that is Cal's ladder act. He is one of the only performers in the world to do a handstand on the freestanding ladder.
Question #4. What's your creative process? How did you come up with the concept behind Pre-Hysterical?
We always look for strong archetypal characters which would support comedic skits. Of all the ideas we have ever had, cavemen was the most fun and the EASIEST to make skits with. Everyone has a caveman inside of them, all you have to do is turn your brain function to low and grunt whilst you play around, you will make the most amazing content!
The team loved playing cavemen, and thus prehysterical was born.
Question #5. Who is a tougher audience, kids or adults? Why?
I think kids can be tougher, because sometimes younger ones can get upset by loud noises or sudden changes. They usually always come back to having fun after a moment though.
Question #6. Who inspires you as a performer and why? Is it another circus performer or acrobat?
My team is very inspiring! They are all so dedicated and amazing at what they do. I feel inspired to do my best every time I take the stage with them.
Question #7. What do you guys most look forward to when coming to Perth?
I'm from Melbourne so I should say sunny weather and beaches... but I actually love the festival itself. The staff, the shows, the vibe, the whole thing is such an amazing month. Its my favourite festival in the whole world and I look forward to it every year.

Question #8. Besides Pre-Hysterical what other shows do you perform? Anything cool for a date night?
OMG yes. We have the perfect show for a date night. It's called GODZ. It's a raunchy acrobatic and comedy show that is set on Mt Olympus. We play with a bunch of greek gods getting loose and having fun. It's also very R rated so dont bring the kids.

Top 5 Pre-Hysterical Fun Facts
Fun Fact #1. The combined years spent training of our 3 performers, is over SIXTY years spent in a gym!
Fun Fact #2. One of our performers in Prehysterical, Chelsea Angell , knew she wanted to be a circus performer ever since she was 5 years old. When she was in school, she borrowed a book every week, the book was called "how to be an Acrobat." It's the most adorable fact.
Fun Fact #3. We got the name Prehysterical by asking our fanbase on facebook for a name for a caveman show, there was a LOT of great suggestions but Prehysterical was the standout.
Fun Fact #4. The most important item for a successful prehysterical show is actually a bottle of liquid chalk. Its a product that drys the sweat on your hands and makes them grippy. Without it, the show is too dangerous to perform.
Fun Fact #5. The names of the characters in the show are ERgh, Gronk and Ow. We have had different cast members over the 3 years, we have had 3 Ergs, 2 Ows and only 1 Gronk.
