In an exclusive interview with Kids In Perth, get to know Nick as he prepares for the annual motorsport spectacle that is the Bosch Power Tools Perth SuperSprint!
What inspired you to pursue a career in racing?
My Dad and family are massive car nuts and Dad loved formula 1. He raced go karts and I wanted to race karts to.
Describe the moment you realized you wanted to be a professional race car driver...
Hard to pin point, always wanted to be a racing car driver. One day it was just fun at the local track, next day I was racing supercars!
What challenges did you face in the early stages of your career?
Trying to put ourselves in the correct teams in junior categories to get the right guidance.
How did your victory at the 2011 Bathurst 1000 shape your racing career?
It made my career. I was on the right path but it was still going to be very difficult. The Bathurst win cemented my spot in Australian Motorsport.
What does a typical race week look like for Nick Percat?
Very low key, I normally do some easy training early in the week like a swim. And then just relax for a day or so before travelling.
What aspects of racing do you find most challenging? What has racing taught you?
Driving the car is the easy part.
Understanding the car and data to improve each session and race is hard. Our category is very competitive. It’s taught me you need to be very committed and nothing comes easy.
Who has been the biggest influence on your career? Why?
My family, endless support.
How do you prepare mentally and physically for a race weekend?
I try to have a day off prior to the race weekend to make sure I am well-rested.
What has been the most memorable race of your career and why?
The Adelaide 500 win - winning my home race was unbelievable.
How do you stay motivated during tough times in the championship?
I have a karting team I own and run. So I spend a lot of time working on the karts and distracting myself.
What advice would you give to the young children in the stands?
Follow your dreams and crazy things can happen.
