In this exclusive interview, Morgan James, the dynamic force behind WA’s own Ricochet Circus, provides insight into the creative process and inspiration behind his latest Fringe World show, "A Circus Sized Game Show".

This behind-the-scenes journey offers a glimpse into the motivations, challenges, and joys of a seasoned performer and entrepreneur in the realm of circus arts.

The Birth of A Circus Sized Game Show

Morgan's creative journey kicked off with a unique challenge: pulling off the biggest show in the smallest venue at last year’s festival. The result? A Pocket Sized Circus, a hit that set the stage for its larger counterpart. Fuelled by the success of the smaller show, Morgan envisioned a grander spectacle, maintaining the interactive choose-your-own-adventure style that struck a chord with both him and his audience.

The game show theme is a nostalgic nod to Morgan's childhood, reminiscing about classic game shows with their charismatic hosts and everyone emerging as a winner. Promising a rollercoaster of danger, great music, entertaining games, and a never-performed-before finale, this show aims to captivate and surprise the whole family. Morgan believes that true family entertainment caters to all, not just the younger audience, which is the ethos behind his circus company, Ricochet Circus.

Finding Inspiration Everywhere

Morgan's creative process is a melting pot of influences. Whether drawn from music, discussions with fellow international performers, or the encouragement to brainstorm ideas, he embraces inspiration from every corner. The overarching theme of his shows is to inspire and convey the message that pursuing what makes you happy is of utmost importance.

A Glimpse into Circus Life and Lessons Learned

A day in Morgan's life unveils a meticulous blend of administrative tasks, show preparations, training, and immersing himself in other forms of entertainment for inspiration. Discipline, he shares, comes from staying connected to a global circus family and maintaining physical fitness.

The most significant lesson from his life as a performer? Embracing failure as a stepping stone to improvement. This resilience is a message he weaves into his shows and workshops, encouraging audiences to pick themselves up and try again.

The Persona on Stage

Morgan's character on stage pays homage to comedy legends like Steve Martin, Robin Williams, and Jim Carrey. Morgan states “they have influenced me to the point where my act has been described as a standup comedy routine formula, with circus tricks in it.” The meticulous attention to costume and stage presence, inspired by Steve Martin's advice to always "look better than they do," adds an extra layer to the visual appeal.

Overcoming Adversity and Inspiring Kids

Morgan's childhood, marked by bullying, found solace in the circus community. His experiences inspired him to teach circus skills to thousands of kids, emphasizing the inclusive and non-competitive nature of the art form. His message to youngsters: if you believe it's worth it, go for it.

A Creative Partner in Crime

Nora, Morgan's wife, plays a pivotal role in his creative process. Her patience with his wild ideas, collaborative brainstorming, and a commitment to quality, especially in costume design, contribute significantly to the polished and visually captivating Ricochet Circus performances.

In the bustling life of Morgan James, where every day is a blend of work and passion, the underlying theme remains unchanged: the pursuit of happiness through circus arts, bringing joy to audiences worldwide.

Q+A | More on Morgan...

Question 1. Tell us about the concept behind your latest Fringe World Show "A Circus Sized Game Show"... Why were Game Shows the concept and inspiration behind it? How did you come up with it?

Last year I was challenged to perform the biggest show in the smallest venue, so I created A Pocket Sized Circus, my most popular show to date. Now we’re in the prestigious De Parel Spiegel Tent, I wanted to continue the idea of “what show does this venue demand”, so I want to take the success of that show and turn it into a larger version, keeping the main style of “choose your adventure”, which struck a chord with me and the audience. It’s wild not knowing what will happen next in the show, as the audience gets to choose how the show will go.

In terms of the game show aspect, I was inspired by those old game shows I used to watch growing up; the fast-talking, suave, sophisticated show host in his glittery jacket was a role model for my character onstage. I also love the idea of the audience being the contestant, and everyone is a winner.

Question 2. What can people look forward to?

A wild ride!

There will be danger, live music, lots of fun games and a finale that I’ve never performed before.

Question 3. What are you most proud of with this show?

I’m most proud of the fact that it’s a solo show. I’ve performed all over the world, in big circus troupes, head-lined at comedy clubs and in theatre ensembles, but this time it will be just me. It gives me such joy to make audiences happy, that’s all that matters.

Question 4. Where do you get inspiration for new shows? How do you come up with these ideas?

I get inspired by everything in the world around me, I can’t switch it off! For instance, I listen to music, then that song will get me thinking about an act I could to it. I’m also really privileged to work in an industry where brainstorming is encouraged; I’m constantly sharing ideas with other performers, who are always up to listen to my latest crazy business idea or new act.

Question 6. Why do you do what you do?

Because I absolutely love it!

I grew up in a small town, and I had a big dream- to travel the world and make everyone just a little happier.

I have this huge circus family now, and I know that I can travel anywhere in the world and there will always be people who accept me. I don’t think I could ever do anything else; this is the life for me.

Question 7. What's a performer's life like? What keeps you going?

You know how they say “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life”?

It’s not true, I work every single day, and there are no days off.

But I love it so much, it’s worth it. I love being able to create my opportunities; I grew up with a dream to perform in a big top here in Perth, and I’ve just recently gotten my big top. It's been incredible making my actual dreams come true.

Question 8. Describe the creative space where you come up with these shows?

I live in an old townhouse, with a converted shopfront downstairs.

You get into the shop by ducking your head through a little passageway, filled with circus posters!

It’s really separate from the rest of the house, which has been great in terms of keeping a work/life balance.

Question 9. Take us through a typical day... what's it like being Morgan James and running Ricochet Circus?

Well, being a circus performer is fun, but running a circus company is very much like running any other business.

I wake up and usually take my coffee straight to my office and check my emails. I generally do a few hours of admin in the morning, unless I have a gig on during the day. I do any prep needed for gigs, like re-stringing diabolos, packing circus equipment and preparing my costume.

In the afternoons I try and get some training in, usually at the warehouse. I also love going to watch shows; I think it’s really important to watch other forms of entertainment for inspiration, so a few times a week we are out watching a play, or an opera, or a comedian.

Question 10. How do you stay disciplined in your craft?

One of the most important things for me is keeping connected with my circus family all over the world. Talking to them, sharing ideas, being inspired.

There are several juggling conventions in Australia, and whenever I go, I always get so much better. When it’s a concentrated group of highly talented people, I’m so driven to improve; they keep me disciplined.

I also really value keeping in shape, as my job is so physically demanding. On a normal show day, I will easily do 10,000 steps in a single show.
