Q+A / Quick Consult with Dr. Geoff Cooper & Dr. Julie Lourie

Q1. As optometrists and parents, why is childhood myopia concerning?

Myopia is a condition where the eyeball becomes progressively elongated resulting in blurred distance vision. Moderate to high degrees of myopia are associated with increased risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma and macular degeneration later in adulthood.

Myopia progression is due to genetic and environmental factors. Genetic factors cannot be modified but environmental factors can.

The onset of myopia progression is occurring at a much younger age than say 20 years ago. This is thought to be due to changes in the visual environment including lengthy periods of close work on digital devices and less time spent playing outside in sunlight.

Question 2. Is childhood myopia or short sightedness curable?

Childhood Myopia cannot be reduced or removed once it has developed however the rate of increase in myopia in childhood can be reduced or halted by various therapies.

Question 3. Is a child born with childhood myopia or is it caused by trauma such as over rubbing their eyes?

Children who become myopic are born with a predisposition to become myopic. It is not caused by trauma or eye rubbing etc. The amount of close and screen work can determine the myopia and its rate of progression.

Naturally, there will be more questions to answer...
