Companion Animals

Horses are social herd animals.

The ability to cope with being separated from other horses and be alone varies between horses, with some suffering separation anxiety when removed from the company of other horses.

Companion animals are sometimes used to accompany horses in the float for their trips to the racecourse and may be seen in the horse stalls.

Having a calm companion horse has been shown to lower fear responses and stress levels in horses.

Shetland ponies are commonly used as they are easier to handle than larger horses, although some trainers have also been known to use goats with the same success.

How to Approach a Horse...

Approaching a horse should always be done in a calm and respectful manner to ensure safety for both you and the horse.

Here are five friendly ways to approach a horse:

Approach Slowly: Walk calmly and quietly towards the horse. Sudden movements or loud noises can startle them.

Offer an Open Hand: Extend your hand, palm down and fingers relaxed, for the horse to sniff. This allows them to become familiar with your scent.

Speak Gently: Talk to the horse in a soft, soothing voice. This can help reassure the horse that you mean no harm.

Stay to the Side: Approach from the side rather than directly from behind or in front of the horse. Horses have a blind spot in these areas, and startling them can lead to a defensive reaction.

Watch for Signals: Pay attention to the horse's body language. If they seem agitated, anxious, or show signs of discomfort, give them space and reassess your approach.

Remember every horse has its own personality and comfort level with people. Some may be more sociable and approachable than others, so it's important to gauge the individual horse's reactions and adjust your approach accordingly.

Always prioritise safety when interacting with horses, especially if you are not familiar with their temperament.

Style Guide | What to wear?!?

For Mum

Dressing for the Ascot Racing Spring Carnival is all about elegance, style, and a touch of glamour.

Here are 10 fashion tips for women attending this year's event:

Dresses: Opt for a sophisticated bright, pastel, or floral print dress. Midi or knee-length dresses are classic choices.

Hats or Fascinators: A stylish headpiece is a must. Choose a hat or fascinator that complements your outfit and adds a touch of drama.

Heels: High heels are the go-to footwear choice. Block heels or wedges can be more comfortable for a day of standing and walking.

Clutch Bag: A small clutch bag in a matching or contrasting colour completes your look. Ensure it's big enough to carry essentials like your phone, lipstick, and betting tickets.

Jewellery: Keep it understated but elegant. A statement necklace or a pair of statement earrings can add a touch of sophistication.

Outerwear: Spring weather can be unpredictable, so consider a light jacket or shawl that complements your dress.

Gloves: Elbow-length gloves can add a touch of vintage glamour to your ensemble.

Stockings: If you wear a dress, consider sheer socks for a polished look.

Makeup and Hair: Keep makeup fresh and natural, and consider a classic updo or soft waves for your hair.

Comfort: Most importantly, wear something you're comfortable in, as you'll be on your feet and moving around throughout the day.

For Dad

Dressing for the Ascot Racing Spring Carnival is an opportunity to showcase style and sophistication.

Here are the top five fashion tips for men attending the event:

Suit Up: A well-tailored suit is a must for the Spring Carnival. Opt for a classic suit in a light or medium shade, such as navy, grey, or light blue. A two-piece suit or a three-piece suit with a vest can add an extra touch of elegance.
Crisp Dress Shirt: Pair your suit with a crisp, high-quality dress shirt. Light-colored shirts like white or light blue work well, but you can also experiment with subtle patterns or pastel shades.
Ties and Accessories: A tie or bowtie adds a polished finish to your outfit. Choose a tie that complements your suit and shirt. Don't forget to accessorize with a pocket square, cufflinks, and a stylish belt.
Footwear: Opt for well-polished leather dress shoes. Classic colors like black or brown are versatile choices. Ensure they are comfortable as you'll likely be on your feet for much of the day.
Headwear: A stylish hat or fedora is a classic choice for race day. It not only adds flair to your outfit but also provides sun protection. Ensure it complements your suit and fits well.

Pro Tip: Pay attention to grooming by keeping your hair neatly styled and facial hair well-groomed. Also, consider a wristwatch for a touch of sophistication.

For the Kids

Dressing your kids for the Ascot Racing Spring Carnival can be a fun and stylish experience.

Top 5 fashion tips for kids attending the event:

Dapper Dresses and Suits: For boys, consider a classic suit in a light colour or pastel shade, paired with a crisp dress shirt and a coordinating tie or bowtie.

For girls, opt for elegant dresses or skirts in light, cheerful colors. Pastels, florals, and classic prints work well.

Comfortable Footwear: Ensure your child wears comfortable, closed-toe shoes, as they may be walking and standing for extended periods. Well-fitted and stylish shoes, like loafers or dress shoes for boys and ballet flats for girls, are ideal.

Accessories: Add a touch of elegance with age-appropriate accessories.

Boys can wear a smart belt, while girls can wear hair accessories like headbands, bows, or hairpins.

Don't forget to include a sun hat or bonnet for both sun protection and style.

Outerwear: Be prepared for varying weather conditions. A lightweight, coordinating jacket or cardigan can add warmth and style to their outfit. Choose colors that match their ensemble.

Sun Protection: As the event is outdoors, sunscreen is essential to protect your child's skin from the sun. Opt for a gentle, child-friendly sunscreen and consider a stylish pair of sunglasses with UV protection.

Bonus Tip: Capture the memories by taking photos of your child's stylish race day outfit. It's a great way to create lasting memories of their day at the Spring Carnival.

Remember that Ascot Racing Course has a dress code, so check specific requirements for the event you're attending.

With these tips, the whole family will be ready to enjoy a day of horse racing in style!
