Q&A |Meet the Composer
How would you describe the experience of watching a live orchestra to someone who is new to classical music?
Without a doubt, the orchestra is best experienced live in concert.
Sure, recordings are great, but sitting in an amazing hall (like Perth Concert Hall) and watching a brilliant band (like WASO) is just wonderful. I love getting lost in the sound and letting the music work its magic.
There is something very special about a huge orchestra coming together, to create a completely unique performance for their audience.
Is it true that classical music helps children with numeracy and literacy?
Absolutely. Music can help young people (and also not so young people) achieve things that could otherwise be perceived as difficult or complicated.
There are many studies that highlight that, but I’ve been lucky enough to witness those benefits first-hand.
It's so impressive when a school chooses to weave music throughout its entire curriculum, and from what I’ve seen, pretty much every subject area can benefit.
If you had to pick your favourite instrument, what would it be?
Easy - as long as can I pick three: cello (for its expressiveness), bass clarinet (for its depth and warmth) and marimba (because I adore its sound). You will hear all three of them featured (a lot) in Leon!
What can families expect from this concert?
Our concert will be fun and interactive with a great selection of music played by the fabulous musicians of WASO. We have a brilliant story, beautiful images projected above the orchestra and there’s an open invitation for everyone to make music together. Make sure you bring your best singing voice!
What’s your favourite thing to do when you visit Perth?
I love Perth. I’ve been lucky to enough work with WASO many times now, so I feel I know the city really well. My absolute favourite thing to do is to swim outdoors at Scarborough Beach Pool. We have nothing quite like it back home in London - and we certainly don’t have the weather!
