The Great Un-Wondering of Wilbur Whittaker

By Dan Giovannoni

Suitable for Age 8+

"All grown-ups were children once. Although few of them remember it."

Get ready to be whisked away across the universe this April school holidays with Barking Gecko Theatre’s, The Great Un-Wondering of Wilbur Whittaker.

It is the story of Wilbur Whittaker, whose mind, as a boy, would wander and wonder, but these days he cares more about sensible things like neck-ties and… fences.

That is until one night when Wilbur is visited by a collections officer from ‘The Bureau’ – a recycling agency for long forgotten wonderings. Wilbur surrenders a special shoebox of his most precious childhood wonderings only to discover that without it, he begins to disappear. With time running out before he is un-wondered forever, Wilbur is drawn into an epic adventure that takes him to the furthest reaches of the galaxy.

A brand-new Australian play about creativity, growing up and living outside the box The Great Un-Wondering of Wilbur Whittaker is a fun-filled, intergalactic adventure for the whole family to enjoy!

This must-see show by WA’s award-winning children’s theatre company premieres at Heath Ledger Theatre from 9-16 April before rocketing off to Karratha, Bunbury and Albany.

Barking Gecko - about

Barking Gecko Theatre is Western Australia's locally cherished, nationally significant company that creates theatre for children and their families.

Barking Gecko has a global reputation for crafting exquisite theatre of ambition, sophistication and scale. The stories they tell on stage fuse big ideas and questions with timeless, imaginative worlds. Barking Gecko speaks to children in the here and now – to their inner lives and experience of growing up in a complex world.

When it comes to creating theatre for young audiences, their motto is: for the smallest, only the finest. They work with the country’s leading artists, developing their shows with care and rigour over a number of years.

Once Barking Gecko's productions premiere in Perth they go on to tour regionally, nationally and internationally. The productions are linked to year-round Creative Learning programs that they deliver in classrooms and communities. Children feed into their creative process via their Gecko Ensembles program of weekly drama classes, creating a direct connection with audiences across metropolitan Perth and regional WA.

Across their 30+ year history, Barking Gecko has created 72 new Australian works and performed in 12 countries across the globe. Their award-winning theatre has reached audiences of over 1 million people, leaving a legacy of wonder and imagination in the hearts and minds of children.

Gecko Ensembles | Weekly drama classes

Barking Gecko - gecko essemble

Gecko Ensembles are Barking Gecko Theatre's weekly drama classes for children. It’s where self-expression leads to self-confidence, as children stretch their imaginations in exciting directions.

Gecko Ensembles focus on the learning that comes from engaging with drama processes. Children question, explore, imagine and create. Through exploring some of life's big questions children develop collaboration and communication skills and build resilience and empathy. They challenge themselves, listen to each other, learn new skills and most importantly, have fun!

Gecko Ensembles celebrate children’s diverse ideas, interests and imagination. Children act as our creative consultants, exploring the same content as Barking Gecko’s artistic teams are exploring in our rehearsal rooms.

Classes are facilitated by our Teaching Artists, who are accomplished industry professionals, passionate in helping young people discover their potential through drama.

Available for Little Geckos (5 - 7), Junior Geckos (8 - 12), Senior Geckos (13+) at a number of locations across metropolitan Perth and regional WA.
