The AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things showcases a spectacular array of events including theatre, creative workshops, literature events, music, ballet, exhibitions and a whole range of free activities!

“There once was a little llama, who loved to run and jump and dance. One day, she ran and jumped and danced right over the paddock fence… and into the bush!”

Join Little Llama and her frenemy, Kookaburra, on their adventure as they get lost in the bush, try to find their way home and learn about the importance of friendship along the way.

This FREE ballet will be performed at 10:00am & 11:30am daily in the James St Amphitheatre in the Perth Cultural Centre – no tickets needed!

Curious kids looking or the answers for life’s biggest questions will love Creation Creation – A daring and audacious journey to the very edge of the universe and back again. Watch as blankets become forts, cardboard boxes become battleships and ping pong balls become planets in this hilarious attempt to answer life’s biggest questions.

Two fearless creators have been asked to step onto the stage and attempt to unravel the mysteries of the universe using whatever tools they have at their disposal. Based on interviews with members of the South Australian community aged between 8-102, Creation Creation is a comedy about life’s biggest mysteries.

Did you know that long before humans ventured in to space, we sent dogs, a fruit fly, a guinea pig and even monkeys? Learn all about animals who have lifted off into space at this exhibition of illustrations by West Australian Author and Illustrator James Foley. See illustrations from his latest book Stellarphant and discover different animals who have explored space!

This free exhibition is taking place in the Studio Underground Foyer at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia from 10am – 3pm Daily, Tues 27th  Sept – Sat1st Oct

Welcome to the luscious Singaporean forest!

Feel the textured leaves with your toes and fingertips, smell the exotic flowers, play hide-and-seek with Hornbill, spot Owl in the moonlit canopy, and help Kingfisher look after her eggs. In the magical Hutan, even a passing rain shower brings a surprise visit from the cheeky Gibbons with a mayhem-filled picnic of yummy tropical fruits for all their new friends.

Inspired by the National Museum of Singapore’s William Farquhar Collection of Natural History Drawings, the immersive tactile set, beautiful live music and friendly performers makes this a delightful inclusive experience for children with access needs and their friends.

Bring the family down to the seashore – a place to breathe in the sea air, get your feet wet and catch a wave; an open, playful space of infinite sky and footprints in the sand.

Seashore is a 40-minute performance work for, and with, children aged three years and younger, created and presented by Sally Chance Dance in collaboration with Perth-based children and their adults.

Sally Chance Dance promotes the social and cultural status of very young children and the important role of parents/carers, making visible the pleasure and power of dance play.

It’s 1998. Otto is twelve but online he’s thirteen and he’s pretty sure he gets away with it. He lives with his mum, dad, and sister, a mysterious Icelandic granny, and an ancient malevolent troll that’s lurking in the walls.

From Trick of the Light Theatre comes a lo-fi wi-fi fable. Tröll combines storytelling, projection, music and puppetry into an uncanny tale from the dial up age.

A sensitive, funny, yet heart-hitting show based on the stories of parents, siblings, and guests of Hummingbird House, Queensland’s only youth hospice, We Live Here explores themes of resilience, chaos, and the beauty of a moment shared.

AWESOME’s famous free activities have had a makeover this year! In 2022 AWESOME is proud to present 7 new Creative Hubs, all hosted and led by professional West Australian Artists. Festival goers can take part in amazing activities, and learn new skills from professional artists!

Bright Young Things of all ages are sure to enjoy creating and learning from professional artists at Crafty Nannas, Young Inventors, Roll Up, Roll Up!, C.U.B.S. Cubby, Paper City, Eco Place and Weaving the Wetland.

Join West Australian Artists Louise Snook, Lewis Horne, Ben Crappsley, Yip Yip Circus, Aidan Bayliss, Glenn Swift, Minaxi May, Charlotte O’Shea and Fiona Gavino for days of fun and creativity!

AWESOME has a range of amazing hands-on workshops that will excite bright young things of all ages!

Children can create a unique masterpiece by mixing and matching colours, shapes and sizes in 3D Painting with Nathan Hoyle, or learn how to draw their very own Animal Astronaut Portraits with WA Author Illustrator James Foley.

If there’s a budding author in your life, they’re sure to love learning to produce and design their own book in Book Making with Josh Earl.

Learn about totems, culture and conservation from proud Whadjuk Noongar yok (woman) Rickeeta Walley in Totem Making.

For the performers to be, Journey to Africa with Afrobeat Dance with Bellamore Ndayieze will have everyone moving and grooving, whether you’ve danced before or it’s your very first time.

Join DJ duo the Dollar Bin Darlings for an afternoon of silliness, games, music and disco in Disco Dance Rhythm & Play.

Get ready to learn about how music brings us all together and leave full of confidence, ready to dance at the disco.

What is the AWESOME Arts Festival?

The AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things (the AWESOME Festival) is presented annually in the Perth CBD.

The Festival showcases a spectacular array of events including theatre, dance, early childhood activities, music, film, literature, visual arts and creative hands-on activities.

AWESOME is committed to presenting high-quality, layered programming for children aged 0 – 12 and their families.

AWESOME in Schools

AWESOME offer bespoke incursions to schools in the Perth metro area throughout the year.

They can arrange for a professional AWESOME artist to run workshops at your school and are happy to tailor them to your class needs with a number of art forms to select from including:

  • Illustration
  • Circus
  • Improvisation
  • Printmaking
  • Music
  • … and more!

Due to the AWESOME Festival, they're not able to deliver incursions in September or October.
